second chance

he had a 50/50 chance of surviving a heart surgery to remove a clot but he pulled through - the first thing he saw when he woke up was his wife of 50 years, and he said, "well, look at you."

hospital rounds without power

from the d.r. trip - the woman with the most serious medical procedure gets checked on late at night without power at the hospital. she almost died but i'm very happy to report that she pulled through and is now much better.

hospice

her mom is dying and now the daughter is now taking care of her - the older woman has esophageal cancer and now has to be feed through a feeding tube. amazing to watch the devotion of this daughter.

vet day

i went around to various cemeteries today feature hunting for veteran's day and came across this - the woman at left was married to a man who is buried at the state vet cemetery. the son is pictured at center - he came to tell his dad the news that he just got engaged to the woman at right. i was doing fine getting the info until he told me this story as tears rolled down his face, and i found myself crying as well. it was an emotional exchange that made me very glad to witness this moment, and i'm thankful to them for opening up to me.

i'm continually amazed of the beauty and power of daily life.

medical mission trip

back from a trip to the dominican republic documenting a local medical mission team - here one of the members consoles a child who was pretty scared before surgery on a hernia. great to do some work again out of the country and amazing to see what can be done in one week by this team.
