vegemite
so my waxingly poetic thoughts resulting from the emotional state of bliss following the colin hay concert led me back to thoughts of walking around as a 7th grader inside the cafeteria of northeast junior high school in mint hill, n.c., showing off my new album of "cargo" by men at work.
i remember bringing it in to try and impress lori yerkes, my crush circa 1983-1986. sadly she was not impressed and told me if i looked more like nick rhodes from duran duran, then she would think about going with me. the trouble was i looked more like anthony michael hall from the breakfast club.
all to say it got me thinking, just what WAS a vegemite sandwich? and whalah, here's what i learned today:

so cool
went to go see colin hay tonight (formerly of men at work) with some friends - it was wonderful getting to meet him afterwards and it was at a perfect, small venue in east hartford.
hay sings a song that is particularly beautiful, in case you don't know his music - it's called "waiting for my real life to begin."
it's a song i used to listen to often when i was unemployed, and while quoting songs can be cheesy, please forgive me - i really love this song, and these lyrics:
Any minute now my ship is coming in
I'll keep checking the horizon
And I'll check my machine
There's sure to be that call
It's gonna happen soon, soon, oh so very soon
It's just that times are lean
And you say,"Be still, my love
Open up your heart
Let the light shine in"
Don't you understand?
I already have a plan
I'm waiting for my real life to begin
i often think back to that difficult year, and listening to this song helped temper the frustration of that time. it's amazing the power of music.
anyway, it was great to hear him play that tonight and to know those days are behind, and tomorrow is wide open.

ben
this woman's son, ben, died in may (she's holding a picture of him)
in thanks to the local children's hospital that took care of him, she is holding a tag sale of his toys and other donations to raise money for it.
it's really sad hearing her story, but it was also wonderful as well spending time with her this afternoon. it was touching how open she was about the passing of her son - also at right one of her sons holds a blanket that ben used to sleep with.

almost done
today i think i did my final work with the tom and theresa story - final audio interviews for the web slideshow.
whew, it's so strange to say goodbye to a subject you've spent so much time with and to close the relationship as a journalist/subject. it's interesting though, as i was interviewing them, i still felt the urge to be photographing them. while i do like multimedia, i'm still drawn and compelled to document the visual experience of life.
here's an outtake from the project, them at the end of their wedding.

sad
from a vigil of the death of a 22-year-old, who police say died resulting from a fall while avoiding police capture, while family and friends say he was pushed by the police out of a window to his death.
the girl at center is the girlfriend of the man who died and the others are family and friends. it made me really sad to witness, and i feel for their grief.
